River Cruising / Scenic Float in Sepik River
Papua New Guinea's greatest river, winding more than a thousand kilometres through lowland swamp and rainforest to the Bismarck Sea, its banks lined with villages of haus tambaran spirit houses and a woodcarving tradition that ranks among the finest in the Pacific.
Why here
The Sepik is the Amazon of Papua New Guinea, a vast brown river looping through a floodplain of swamp, lakes and rainforest with no road along it, so the water is the highway and the village is the world. What draws travellers is the culture of its banks: the haus tambaran, tall spirit houses with soaring painted facades, the finest woodcarving in the Pacific, and initiation rites in which young men's backs are cut to scar like a crocodile's skin, marking the river's crocodile ancestor. You move by boat, either a shallow-draught cruiser on the tributaries and Blackwater Lakes or a motor canoe on the main river, stopping at villages to see carvers at work, spirit houses opened to visitors and daily life that still runs to the rhythm of the flood. It is one of the last places to witness a living river culture on this scale, remote, unhurried and reached only by water or light aircraft.
Best months
The river is travelled year-round, but the drier months from about May to October give firmer footing in the villages and easier flying into the airstrips; the wet raises the river and floods the grass plains. It is hot, humid and buggy on the water, so bring sun cover and repellent. This is gentle travel rather than adventure paddling, moving between villages by boat, with the effort being the remoteness and the heat rather than any physical demand.
Getting there & around
There are two ways onto the river. The comfortable route is a charter flight to the Karawari airstrip and a small river cruiser working the tributaries and Blackwater Lakes, usually as part of a wider highlands circuit. The overland route runs to Wewak on the north coast, then by road to a river town such as Pagwi or Ambunti and onto a motor canoe with a local operator for village stays. Either way this is remote travel arranged through an operator; there is no independent tourist infrastructure along the Sepik.

Its guides are local men with family ties to the river communities the tours pass through.

Reached by charter flight to the Karawari airstrip, it cruises the Karawari and Krosmeri rivers, tributaries of the Sepik, and the Blackwater Lakes, stopping at villages for spirit houses, carving and river life. Trans Niugini Tours was founded in 1976 and owns lodges and aircraft nationwide, running the boat within a wider highlands circuit.
