The desert southwest of Angola, where the Namib's ancient welwitschia plains and the Iona National Park meet the Atlantic, climbing inland over the Serra da Leba pass to the Tundavala escarpment above Lubango.
Why here
The Namibe region is Angola's great desert drive, the northern end of the Namib and one of the last big overlanding frontiers in Africa. From the port town of Namibe you run south into Iona National Park, the country's largest, a stark landscape of dunes, gravel plains and the bizarre welwitschia, a plant that lives a thousand years on two ever-growing leaves, where the desert falls straight into the cold Atlantic. Turning inland, the route climbs the Serra da Leba pass, a famous ribbon of hairpins cut into the escarpment, up to the highlands around Lubango and the Tundavala Gap, where the plateau simply ends in a sheer drop of around a thousand metres to the plains below. It is a self-contained expedition of desert, mountain and coast, thin on fuel and services, that rewards a well-prepared four-wheel-drive convoy and a good local guide. The emptiness, the light and the sheer scale are the draw, along with the sense of driving country that very few outsiders have seen.
Best months
The dry, cooler months from June to September are the practical window, with firmer going and less heat, though the coastal desert is famously foggy in the mornings year-round. This is remote, self-reliant driving: long distances between fuel, soft sand and rocky tracks in Iona, and a serious mountain pass at Serra da Leba, so high-clearance four-wheel-drive, recovery gear, water and navigation are essential. Distances and permits for Iona are best handled with a guide.
Getting there & around
The region is reached from Namibe town, which has an airport and a road link from Lubango, itself connected to Luanda by air. Iona National Park is remote and largely trackless, with almost no services, so most travelers join a guided four-wheel-drive expedition that carries fuel, water and recovery equipment and arranges park permits. The Serra da Leba pass and Tundavala viewpoint near Lubango are easier day objectives. Angola issues an e-visa or visa on arrival for many nationalities; check current rules and your government advisory before travel.
