Overlanding / Expedition Driving in CuscoPE
The former Inca capital at 3,400m in the Peruvian Andes. A UNESCO World Heritage city and the staging point for Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the Andean altiplano 4x4 circuits south toward Puno and the Bolivian border.
Why here
The Peruvian altiplano between Cusco and Puno, running at 3,800m elevation along the shore of Lake Titicaca, is one of the world's most dramatic high-altitude driving environments. Cross the border at Desaguadero into Bolivia and the routes extend across the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni and south through the Atacama. From Cusco alone, the circuit toward Puno takes in colonial churches, pre-Inca ruins, and altiplano landscapes that are genuinely unlike anything at lower elevation. The remoteness is real; mechanical preparation and spare parts matter here.
Best months
May through October is the dry season on the altiplano, with clear skies and cold nights (below 0C at altitude). Wet season (November through April) brings rain and some impassable secondary tracks, though main routes stay open. Altitude affects both drivers and vehicles: reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, and the need to acclimatize before driving long distances at elevation. Spend at least two days in Cusco before any highland driving.
Getting there & around
Fly into Alejandro Velasco Astete (CUZ) via Lima. 4x4 rental options are limited in Cusco; Lima offers more choice and many serious overlanders bring their own vehicle from North America or ship from Europe. The Bolivian border crossing at Desaguadero is well-traveled. A carnet de passage simplifies border crossings for own vehicles but is not always strictly enforced. Spare parts are very hard to source in remote altiplano areas; carry basics for your specific vehicle. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is essential at this altitude.
