Why here
Sauti za Busara is African music's proudest stage: a festival held inside Stone Town's Old Fort that books exclusively African and diaspora artists, taarab orchestras from down the street beside Sahel blues and Congolese rumba, with every performance live, no playback allowed. Two decades in, it remains the continent's essential showcase, drawing musicians and audiences from across Africa to a fortress courtyard under the stars, with a street carnival opening and free fringe stages spilling through the old town. The setting does half the work: you watch the future of African music inside a UNESCO World Heritage site, then walk home through the lanes that shaped taarab itself.
Best months
Held annually over three to four days, historically in February and moving to March from 2027 (the 2027 edition is scheduled for March 19-21); confirm each edition's dates on the festival's official site. Zanzibar is hot and humid in festival season, with the Old Fort filling in the evenings and the fringe running through the afternoons.
Getting there & around
Fly into Zanzibar (ZNZ); the festival happens in and around the Old Fort in the heart of Stone Town, all walkable. Book old-town accommodation one to two months ahead for festival week, and buy festival passes online through the official site; day tickets are cheap by international standards and locals attend in force, which is exactly the point.
