Tobago Heritage Festival

The Tobago Heritage Festival is the island's cultural showpiece and the counterpart to Trinidad's Carnival, a two-week celebration each July and August of the folk culture that makes Tobago distinct from its larger sister. Where Trinidad has soca and mas, Tobago has its own older village traditions, and the festival, running since 1986, is built to preserve and perform them. Its structure is the charm: rather than one central event, each participating village across the island is given its own night or weekend to stage what it is known for, so the festival moves from place to place through the fortnight. The signature piece is the Ole Time Wedding at Moriah, a comic, elaborate re-enactment of a nineteenth-century village wedding with the whole community in period dress, but the programme also runs to folk tales and storytelling, tambrin drumming, old-time dances like the reel and jig, salaka feasts and food fairs. For a visitor it is a rare, unpackaged look at living Caribbean folk culture, performed by the communities that own it rather than staged for tourists.
Best months
The festival runs for roughly two weeks from mid-July into the first days of August each year; the 2026 edition, the 39th, runs from 16 July to 1 August. Events are spread across villages island-wide on a published nightly schedule, so plan around which communities are performing when, and the marquee nights such as the Moriah Ole Time Wedding draw the biggest crowds. It is the wet season, warm with the chance of afternoon showers, and many events are outdoors and run into the evening, so bring a light rain layer.
Getting there & around
Scarborough is the natural base, near the airport at Crown Point and the ferry terminal, but the festival happens in villages spread across the island, from Moriah and Plymouth in the southwest to communities along the ridge and the coast, so a rental car or arranged driver makes it far easier to follow the nightly programme. Check the official schedule for which village performs when and buy tickets for individual ticketed events; some are free. Evenings run late, and roads to the smaller villages are narrow and dark.
