Savonlinna Opera Festival

Finland · Northern Europe

A lake town in the Finnish Lakeland, set on islands in Lake Saimaa around the medieval Olavinlinna castle. Each summer the fifteenth-century fortress becomes an open-air opera house for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, filling the town on the water for a month of grand opera under the northern light.

Why here

The Savonlinna Opera Festival is one of the great opera events in the world, and its setting is the reason. For about a month each summer the courtyard of Olavinlinna, a fifteenth-century island castle in the middle of Lake Saimaa, is roofed and staged as an open-air auditorium for around two thousand people, and the thick stone walls throw the voices back with a natural acoustic no purpose-built house can match. Founded in 1912 by the Finnish soprano Aino Ackte, the festival mounts a season of fully staged grand opera, in 2026 an Italian programme of Madama Butterfly, Nabucco, The Marriage of Figaro, La Traviata and Bellini's Norma with Lisette Oropesa. Getting there is part of it: you arrive by bridge or boat to a castle on the water in the long, luminous evenings of the Finnish July. For opera lovers it is a pilgrimage, and for everyone else a chance to hear world-class singing inside a real medieval fortress.

Best months

The festival runs across roughly a month in July into early August; in 2026 it plays from 3 July to 1 August at Olavinlinna. Performances are in the roofed but open-sided castle courtyard, so evenings can be cool even in summer and a warm layer helps. Tickets for the popular titles and the best seats sell early, so book well ahead through the official festival. Savonlinna is small and fills for the season, so secure accommodation at the same time.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Savonlinna is in the Finnish Lakeland in the east of the country, reached by train from Helsinki with a change, by long-distance bus, or by a summer flight and connections via Savonlinna's small airport. Olavinlinna castle sits on an island in the town centre, a short walk from the harbour and the main hotels and linked by a pontoon bridge. The town is compact and walkable; book train tickets and rooms early for the festival month.
