Why here
Ohrid is one of only around forty places on earth inscribed by UNESCO for both nature and culture, and its summer festival is the strongest possible expression of the town: since 1961, opera, classical music, and theatre have played inside the 2,000-year-old Ancient Theatre, the country's only Hellenistic stage, with further performances in the forecourt of the 11th-century St. Sophia church and the Dolni Saraj. The festival runs traditionally from July 12 to August 20, five-plus weeks that turn the old town into a nightly venue, and tickets stay cheap by any Western standard. Around the performances sits the lake itself, three million years old, with churches on cliffs and pearl workshops in the lanes.
Best months
Annually, traditionally July 12 to August 20. Tickets are inexpensive and the Ancient Theatre's 1,929 seats sell out for headline nights. July and August are Ohrid's peak season, so book rooms early.
Getting there & around
Ohrid's airport has seasonal European routes, or drive three hours from Skopje. Venues cluster in the walkable old town; evening performances pair with lake swimming days.
