Why here

Fusion is the counter-model to every sponsored mega-festival in Europe. Run since 1997 by the Kulturkosmos collective on a disused military airfield at Lärz, it takes around 70,000 people into what the organizers call holiday communism: no sponsors, no advertising, no VIP areas, no lineup announcements before the gates, and hangars turned into dance floors alongside theater, performance art and political discourse. The aesthetic sits somewhere between Burning Man and a self-governed republic, and the no-spectators ethos means the crowd is the program. Tickets sell by lottery-style allocation and demand outstrips supply every year. For festival-goers who want culture rather than consumption, this is Europe's reference point.

The festival runs four to five days in late June with the campgrounds as the living arrangement. Ticket allocation opens the preceding winter through the festival's own system and demand far exceeds supply, so this is a plan-six-months-ahead event with no walk-up option. Mecklenburg summer swings between hot dust and heavy rain, often within one edition. The collective takes occasional breather years without a festival, so confirm the edition exists before building a trip around it. No press, no sponsors and a strict no-photo culture on the floors.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Berlin is about two hours by car; rail reaches Mirow or Neustrelitz with festival shuttles covering the last stretch. Camping is included in the ticket and effectively mandatory given the location. Bring cash-light habits, the site runs its own systems, and full self-sufficiency for weather. Ticket allocation runs through fusion-festival.de only; anything on resale platforms violates the festival's ethos and its personalization rules.

Kulturkosmos (Fusion Festival)

organizer

The Kulturkosmos Müritz collective, founded 1999, which built and runs the Fusion Festival on the Lärz airfield: non-commercial, unsponsored and self-organized, with hangars as dance floors and a program spanning electronic music, theater and political culture. Tickets allocate through the festival's own system in winter and sell out immediately; the collective also stages the biennial at.tension theater festival on the same site.
