Why here

The Gnaoua Festival is one of world music's essential gatherings: since 1998 it has put the maalems, the hereditary masters of Gnaoua's hypnotic bass-lute and iron castanets, on stage with jazz, blues, and global artists in collaborations invented for that night and never repeated. Gnaoua itself, the healing trance music of descendants of enslaved West Africans, joined UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2019, and the festival is the widest door into it: large stages by the ramparts, intimate late-night lila ceremonies, and a whole town given to the music for three days, most of it free. Essaouira's walkable medina and sea air make it the rare major festival that doubles as a coastal holiday.

Held annually in late June; the 2026 edition runs June 25-27, with the program published on the festival's official site. June in Essaouira is mild and famously windy, bring a layer for the Atlantic evenings. The big stages are free; some intimate sessions are ticketed and sell out.
