A town on the southern edge of Krakow, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, one of the world's oldest working salt mines and a UNESCO World Heritage site from the first list in 1978. Its underground labyrinth of chambers, brine lakes and chapels carved entirely from rock salt draws millions of visitors a year.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an underground world carved from rock salt over seven centuries of mining, and one of the very first sites UNESCO ever listed, in 1978. The Tourist Route drops you 135 metres down through a 3.5-kilometre sequence of chambers, timbered galleries and green brine lakes, past sculptures, an underground lake with a Chopin light show, and the astonishing St Kinga's Chapel, a full church a hundred metres down with chandeliers, altarpieces and floor tiles all cut from salt. Woven into the route, the Cracow Saltworks Museum displays the mining machines, tools and salt art that tell how the mine worked. It is a Museums-and-Galleries visit like no other, a heritage attraction and a genuine museum set deep beneath the ground.
Best months
The mine is open year-round and stays at a steady 17 to 18 degrees underground, so it is a reliable all-weather visit and a good winter or wet-day choice. The Tourist Route runs about two to three hours including the museum exhibition and involves more than 800 steps down, though a lift brings you back up. It is busy, especially in summer and holidays, so book a timed English-language tour ahead; it suits most ages and fitness levels.
Getting there & around
Wieliczka is about half an hour from central Krakow by train, bus or car, and works as a half-day trip. The Tourist Route must be done on a guided tour, offered in English and other languages at set times, so reserve a timed slot in advance through the official mine site, especially in high season. Wear flat shoes and a light layer for the constant underground temperature, and note the long descent on foot.
