Museums & Galleries in Tehran
The capital of Iran, sitting under the Alborz mountains, and the country's museum city. Within a few kilometres are the National Museum of Iran, the UNESCO-listed Golestan Palace, the Treasury of National Jewels with the Peacock Throne and the Darya-ye Noor diamond, the Carpet Museum, and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, which holds one of the most valuable collections of Western modern art outside Europe and North America.
Why here
Tehran is where Iran keeps its treasures, and a couple of days in the city's museums is the best introduction to Persian history and art before the classic route south. The National Museum of Iran runs from Palaeolithic stone tools through the palaces of Persepolis to the early Islamic centuries in one building. A short distance away, the Qajar-era Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, layers mirrored halls and painted tilework, while the Treasury of National Jewels, held in the vaults of the central bank, shows the Peacock Throne and the pink Darya-ye Noor, one of the largest diamonds on earth. For a different century, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art keeps Pollock, Rothko and Warhol alongside major Iranian modernists, much of it acquired in the 1970s and rarely shown in full. Seeing these with an English-speaking Iranian guide who can place each object turns a list of galleries into the through-line of a civilization, and it is an easy, city-based first destination for a country far friendlier than its headlines suggest.
Best months
Spring, roughly April to May, and autumn, September to November, are the most pleasant times, with clear air after the winter and before the summer heat and smog. Tehran summers are hot and hazy, winters cold with snow on the Alborz behind the city. The Treasury of National Jewels opens only a few afternoons a week and closes without much notice, so it is worth planning around; Golestan Palace sells separate tickets per building. Fridays and public holidays change hours across all the museums.

Iran is rated US State Department Level 4: Do Not Travel, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Iran (as of 2026-07), citing the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention, particularly of dual nationals, and regional conflict. There are no US consular services in Iran. Despite this, Iran runs a real, well-organized tourism sector, and most nationalities enter on a tourist visa arranged through a licensed Iranian agency, which issues the authorization code you need before you fly into Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport. US, UK and Canadian passport holders must travel on a guided tour by law. International bank cards do not work because of sanctions, so bring enough cash, in euros or dollars, for the whole trip. Check your own government's current advice before booking.
