Sarajevo processes the longest siege of a capital in modern history through some of Europe's most awarded memorial institutions. The War Childhood Museum, built from crowd-sourced objects and testimonies of the children of 1992-95, won the Council of Europe's 2018 Museum Prize against continental heavyweights; Gallery 11/07/95, founded by photographer Tarik Samarah, holds the permanent Srebrenica exhibition in images, maps, and film. The Tunnel of Hope by the airport and the Historical Museum complete a circuit no other city can offer: recent-war memory museology done this intimately exists nowhere else. Pace the day; it earns the heaviness.
Best months
Year-round; tickets run five to ten euros each with online booking at the War Childhood Museum. Everything is central and walkable except the Tunnel, thirty minutes out by the airport. Two institutions per day is the humane pace.
Getting there & around
The central institutions cluster within a walk of Bascarsija. Pair the heavy morning with the food walk's warmth in the afternoon.

OrganizerGallery 11/07/95 at Trg Fra Grge Martića 2 is the first memorial gallery in Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded by photographer Tarik Samarah, whose Srebrenica series forms its permanent exhibition. Around the photographs stand the sixteen-metre Wall of Death naming the 8,372 victims, personal photographs compiled by the Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa, an interactive genocide-mapping display, and a film library of survivor testimonies. Further exhibitions have included Postcards from Sarajevo 1993 and Bosnia 1992–1995.
War Childhood Museum
OrganizerThe War Childhood Museum at Logavina 32 grew from the crowd-sourced book of the same name and describes itself as the world's only museum focused on childhood affected by war, built from donated objects and testimonies, from the Sarajevo siege to more than 2,300 items from children affected by the war in Ukraine. It won the 2018 Council of Europe Museum Prize, awarded within the European Museum of the Year program. Open daily 11:00 to 19:00, wheelchair accessible, with free entry from 17:00 on the last Thursday of each month.
