Punaauia is home to Te Fare Iamanaha, the Museum of Tahiti and her Islands, the place to understand Maohi culture beyond the beach. Set on a lagoonfront site with the peaks of Moorea across the water, French Polynesia's national museum reopened its permanent galleries in March 2023 after a five-year rebuild, and it now tells the story of the archipelagos from their volcanic geology and natural history through the arrival of the first voyagers to the depth of Polynesian society. You move from ocean navigation and the great sailing canoes to tapa bark cloth, tattoo, tiki carving, feather work and the sacred marae, laid out with contemporary staging and clear English labels. It holds one of the richest collections of Polynesian artefacts anywhere, and pairs naturally with the district's Gauguin associations and the lagoon outside, making a half day here the cultural anchor of any Tahiti stay.
Best months
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 9am to 5pm, and closed Mondays and some public holidays, so plan a morning or early afternoon visit and check current hours before arriving. It is comfortable year round as the galleries are indoors, though the cooler, drier May to October months are the most pleasant for pairing the visit with the lagoonfront gardens and the wider west coast.
Getting there & around
Punaauia is about twenty minutes southwest of Papeete by road, past the airport, and the museum sits on the coast at Pointe des Pecheurs. It is an easy taxi, hire car or bus trip from the capital and the west-coast hotels, and slots readily into a day that includes the lagoon, the Museum of Tahiti's gardens and the nearby beaches. No special arrangements are needed; just check opening days, as it closes Mondays.
