Prague packs a remarkable run of art into a walkable centre, and two collections anchor it. The Mucha Museum, the first in the world devoted to Alphonse Mucha, gathers the Art Nouveau master's Paris posters, decorative panels and drawings and tells how the style he made famous fed a Czech national identity. A short way across the river the National Gallery Prague holds the country's main art collection, with its modern and contemporary holdings in the functionalist Trade Fair Palace, a landmark 1920s building that once displayed Mucha's monumental Slav Epic cycle. Together they run from medieval panels and Old Masters to Czech Cubism, the interwar avant-garde and living artists. For anyone who wants to read Czech art and its European ties in a couple of unhurried visits, Prague delivers.
Best months
Both institutions are open year round, generally closed on Mondays, which makes them dependable in any weather. The Mucha Museum is compact and takes about an hour, while the Trade Fair Palace is large and rewards half a day. Labelling includes English, and both offer guided tours and family programmes; check which building holds a given National Gallery collection before visiting.
Getting there & around
Both sit in central Prague: the Mucha Museum on Panska Street just off Wenceslas Square, and the National Gallery's Trade Fair Palace in Holesovice, a short tram or metro ride north. Tickets are bought on arrival or online. They pair easily with the city's other galleries and the castle for a fuller art day, and are ideal for a wet afternoon.

Mucha Museum
OrganizerThe Mucha Museum opened on Prague's Panska Street on 13 February 1998 as the first museum in the world dedicated to Alphonse Mucha (1860 to 1939), the Czech artist who defined the Art Nouveau style. Housed in the Baroque Kaunicky Palace, it shows around a hundred original works from a private collection, arranged in sections on Mucha's Paris years, his decorative style, his role as a visionary and his Slav Epic. It is the only Prague institution showing exclusively Mucha originals.
National Gallery Prague
OrganizerThe National Gallery Prague holds the Czech Republic's principal art collection across several historic buildings in the capital. Its modern and contemporary art fills the Trade Fair Palace, a pioneering functionalist building of the 1920s in Holesovice that also displayed Mucha's twenty-canvas Slav Epic after 2012. The collections range from medieval and Old Master painting to Czech Cubism, the interwar avant-garde and international modern art, with major temporary exhibitions.
