Krakow holds the crown jewels of Polish art and one of Europe's rare surviving medieval centres. In the Princes Czartoryski Museum, a branch of the National Museum, hangs Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, the only Leonardo painting in Poland, alongside a Rembrandt landscape. Under the Main Market Square, the Rynek Underground museum sets you among the excavated foundations of the medieval trading town. The National Museum spreads Polish painting, arms and decorative arts across a dozen branches, and the Wawel Royal Castle crowns the whole. It is a compact, walkable city where a day moves easily from a Renaissance masterpiece to a subterranean archaeology dig without a bus.
Best months
The museums are indoor and open year-round, making Krakow a strong all-weather and winter city break. Most branches close one day a week, usually Monday, and offer a free-admission day that draws queues. The Lady with an Ermine and Rynek Underground use timed tickets that sell out in summer and over holidays, so book ahead; weekday mornings are the calmest.
Getting there & around
The main sites cluster in and around the Old Town within easy walking distance: the Czartoryski on Pijarska, the Rynek Underground beneath the Cloth Hall, and the National Museum's main building a short walk west. Buy timed tickets for the Leonardo and the Underground online in advance, especially in high season, and check each branch's weekly closing day. A single museum pass covers several National Museum branches.

Museum of Krakow

Opened in 2010, that branch preserves in situ the excavated foundations of medieval market stalls, workshops and roads found under the square, presented as the permanent exhibition Following the Traces of European Identity of Krakow across roughly four thousand square metres. Its other branches include Schindler's Factory.
National Museum in Krakow
