A university town in Rwanda's Southern Province, long known as Butare and the country's intellectual and cultural centre. Home to the National University and to Rwanda's Ethnographic Museum, one of the richest collections of Rwandan material culture in the region.
Why here
Huye, the town most Rwandans still call Butare, is the country's old academic capital, and its Ethnographic Museum is the best place to understand Rwandan culture before and beyond the events of 1994. Opened in 1989 as a gift from Belgium, the museum lays out seven galleries of everyday and ceremonial life: farming and hunting tools, pottery and basketry, traditional dress and jewellery, musical instruments, and a fine section on architecture with a full-scale reconstruction of a royal hut. Its collection of Rwandan crafts and its photographs of pre-colonial life are among the most complete anywhere, and the displays are clear and well labelled. In a country whose museums are often shaped by memory of the genocide, this is a quieter, deeper look at how people have lived on these hills for centuries. It pairs well with the nearby King's Palace at Nyanza for anyone tracing the older Rwanda.
Best months
The museum is indoor and open year-round, daily from 9am to 5pm, closing on 7 April for the genocide commemoration. It is best given an hour or two with a guide, who brings the craft and architecture displays to life. Weekday mornings are quietest. Huye is a comfortable base for the deeper south, with a cool highland climate.
Getting there & around
Huye is about two to three hours south of Kigali on a good paved road, an easy day trip or a stop on the way to Nyungwe Forest. The Ethnographic Museum is one of eight national museums under the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, so a combined ticket covering the King's Palace Museum at nearby Nyanza can save money. Guided tours in English are available at the entrance.
