An island in Kuwait Bay, inhabited since the Bronze Age Dilmun era and later a Greek outpost under the successors of Alexander, who knew it as Ikaros. Failaka holds temples, tells and archaeological sites, alongside a restored heritage village recreating traditional Kuwaiti life, and is reached by ferry from Salmiya.
Why here
Failaka is Kuwait's open-air history, an island in the bay that has been lived on almost continuously since the Bronze Age. It was a temple settlement of the Dilmun civilisation that traded across the Gulf, and then, in the third century BCE, a Greek garrison town under the successors of Alexander the Great, who named it Ikaros and left behind a fortress, a temple to Artemis and inscribed stones now studied as some of the easternmost Hellenistic remains. Emptied of its population in the 1990 invasion, the island wears that recent history too, its old town still marked by the conflict. Today a restored heritage village recreates pre-oil Kuwaiti life and the excavated tells and Ikaros sites are open to walk, a rare layering of Bronze Age, Greek and modern Kuwaiti stories on one small island a short ferry ride from the capital.
Best months
Failaka is an outdoor, exposed island, so the cool season from November to April is the time to go; summer is fiercely hot with little shade among the ruins. The ferry crossing depends on weather and can be cancelled in winter winds, so build in flexibility. Sites are spread out and the ground is rough, so sturdy shoes, sun protection and water matter. A day trip is enough to see the heritage village and the main archaeological areas.

Failaka is reached by passenger ferry across Kuwait Bay from the Salmiya waterfront near Marina Mall, a crossing of a little over an hour; the Ikarus service and the state KPTC ferries both run, and schedules are limited so check times and book ahead. On the island, transport to the sites and the heritage village can be arranged locally. Carry water and sun protection, and allow for weather delays.

Failaka Heritage Village
OrganizerFailaka Heritage Village is the restored visitor site on Failaka Island that recreates traditional pre-oil Kuwaiti life, with reconstructed houses, a museum and displays set among the island's archaeological areas. It gives access to the Ikaros and Dilmun-era remains, including the Hellenistic sites left by the Greek settlement of the third century BCE and the older Bronze Age tells, and to the old town marked by the 1990 conflict. It is the main organised way to see the island.
