Timor-Leste won its independence in 2002 after twenty-four years of Indonesian occupation and a resistance that cost as much as a quarter of the population, and Dili is where that story is kept. The Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum, in the former Portuguese Court of Justice building that was burned in the 1999 violence, lays out the armed and clandestine struggle in an exhibition called To Resist is to Win, using documents, photographs and audio-visual testimony. A short distance away, Centro Nacional Chega occupies the old Balide prison where the Portuguese and then the Indonesian military held and tortured Timorese, its cells preserved with the graffiti of the detained and an exhibition drawn from the national truth commission. Together they make Dili one of the most powerful places in Southeast Asia to understand a nation forged in resistance.
Best months
Both museums are indoors, low-cost or free, and open on weekdays and Saturdays, with the Resistance Museum closed Sundays and Mondays and Chega closing for public holidays. The subject matter is heavy, covering massacre, imprisonment and torture, so allow time and expect a sombre visit. Dili is hot and humid year round; the dry season from May to November is the most comfortable time to walk between the sites.
Getting there & around
Both museums are in central Dili and reachable on foot, by taxi or by the local microlet minibuses. The Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum is on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa near the government palace; Centro Nacional Chega is at the old Balide prison a short ride inland. Pair them with the seafront and the Cristo Rei statue for a full day. English signage is partial, so a guide adds context.

Centro Nacional Chega
OrganizerCentro Nacional Chega is a memory and human-rights centre in the old Balide prison in Dili, where the Portuguese and later the Indonesian military detained and tortured Timorese during the occupation. Its exhibition, opened in 2016, is drawn from the report of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation, whose title Chega, Portuguese for enough, it takes; the prison cells are preserved with the graffiti of former detainees.
Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum
OrganizerThe Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum, the Arquivo e Museu da Resistencia Timorense, opened on 7 December 2005 in the former Portuguese Court of Justice building in central Dili, which was burned during the 1999 violence and restored to house it. Its main exhibition, To Resist is to Win, traces the armed and clandestine resistance to the Indonesian occupation of 1975 to 1999 through documents, photographs and audio-visual sources. It is the national museum of the independence struggle.
