The ruins of ancient Merv near the modern city of Mary in south-east Turkmenistan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the great oasis cities of the Silk Road. Its stacked walled districts, from Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala to the 12th-century Seljuk capital of Sultan Kala with the domed mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, spread across kilometres of desert steppe.
Why here
Ancient Merv was once one of the largest cities on earth, a Silk Road capital that rivaled Baghdad and Damascus before the Mongols destroyed it in 1221. What survives, spread across kilometres of desert near modern Mary, is a set of stacked walled cities rather than a single ruin. You walk from the oldest core at Erk Kala, through the Hellenistic and Sasanian district of Gyaur Kala, to the Seljuk capital of Sultan Kala, where the restored mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar still stands under its great dome. The corrugated mud-brick walls of the Great and Little Kyz Kala keeps rise nearby. It is a place you read slowly, with a guide to make sense of the earth mounds and brickwork, and it sees very few visitors, so you often have a thousand years of history to yourself.
Best months
The site is open desert with almost no shade, so spring and autumn are far more comfortable than the fierce summer. Merv is a large archaeological zone measured in kilometres, not a compact museum, and the individual monuments are spread out, so most visits move by vehicle with walking between the main structures. Mornings and late afternoons give the best light and the coolest temperatures. There is little on-site interpretation, which is why a knowledgeable guide makes the difference between mounds and a legible city.

US State Dept Level 1 Exercise Normal Precautions (as of 2026-07), but Turkmenistan is a tightly controlled state where independent tourism is not permitted; a Letter of Invitation, a state-registered guide and a fixed itinerary are mandatory and travel is only possible through a licensed local operator. Merv sits just outside Mary, reached by a domestic flight or a long drive from Ashgabat, and is usually combined with the Karakum and Kunya-Urgench on a wider circuit. Your operator handles the Letter of Invitation, registration, site access and transport. Carry water, sun protection and cash in US dollars.
