Language Immersion in Istanbul
The two-continent city where Ottoman palace cuisine meets Anatolian regional depth: spice-bazaar mornings and hands-on kitchens in Sultanahmet.
Why here
Turkish is a strategic world language of ninety million speakers, and Istanbul teaches it through TOMER, the nationally standardized system Ankara University founded in 1984 and the city's universities now run: CEFR-aligned levels, ministry-recognized certificates, and intensive tracks that take a committed learner from zero to functional in a season. Private centers like Avrasya TOMER add monthly intakes and homestay options at prices far below European language capitals. The immersion argument is the city itself, two continents of daily Turkish across markets, ferries, and tea gardens, where English runs out three neighborhoods from the tourist core and the language starts working immediately.
Best months
Year-round with monthly intakes and summer schools June through August. University TOMER terms follow the academic calendar; private centers roll continuously. Levels run about 850 euros at private centers.
Getting there & around
Fly to Istanbul (IST or SAW). Enroll two to six weeks ahead; schools arrange housing or homestays.

Avrasya TOMER
SchoolAvrasya TOMER is a private Turkish language center on Halaskargazi Caddesi in Sisli, Istanbul, teaching Turkish as a foreign language across five levels, two basic (A1, A2), two intermediate (B1, B2), and one advanced (C1), with all four language skills assessed at the end of each level. Intensive spoken-Turkish courses center on daily communication, with grammar taught as needed, and successful students earn a certificate through the center's TOMER language exam. New intakes start monthly and certificates carry Ministry of Education recognition.
Royal Turkish Schools
SchoolRoyal Turkish Schools teaches Turkish a minute's walk from Taksim Square in central Istanbul, with sister schools in Izmir and Antalya, and has operated since 2014. The intensive course runs 20 lessons a week, Monday to Friday, in classes averaging five students and capped at eight, across all levels with a placement test and a certificate of completion. Courses start every Monday year-round and run from one to 48 weeks, taught in Turkish only from the first day.
