Why here
Prea is Jericoacoara's wind without Jericoacoara's tourism. It sits six kilometers upwind of Jeri along the same stretch of Ceara coast, gets the same trade wind machine, and has none of the buggy tours, the sunset dune crowd or the nightlife. October comes within one percent of the September annual maximum, so you are not trading wind for quiet, you are getting both. The riding is flatwater close to the beach and open ocean beyond it, and the village is small enough that the schools know each other.
Best months
The Ceara trades run hard through the second half of the year, and Prea holds within a percentage point of its annual peak through October. Wind is reliable enough that schools plan multi-day progressions rather than waiting on forecasts. Conditions are cross-shore and the water is warm year round, so this is a place where a beginner can accumulate hours quickly. The downwind run to Jericoacoara is the standard local excursion and every school runs it. The flip side of a small village is a small bench: fewer schools than Guajiru, fewer beds, and everything books out in the peak months.
Getting there & around
Fly into Fortaleza and drive four to five hours northwest, or fly to Jericoacoara airport at Cruz and transfer around 40 minutes. Almost all transfers are arranged through your pousada. Prea is a village rather than a resort, so accommodation is small pousadas and the food scene is limited. Jericoacoara is close enough to visit for an evening if you want the noise, which is arguably the right way to use it. Instruction is in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
