Kitesurfing in Noumea
The capital of New Caledonia, on the south coast of Grande Terre, and the territory's port, market and cultural hub on the shore of the world's largest lagoon. Its bays at Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons front the UNESCO-listed barrier reef, and the Renzo Piano Tjibaou Cultural Centre on the Tina peninsula anchors Kanak culture in the city.

Noumea is one of the best places in the Pacific to learn and ride kitesurf, because the world's largest lagoon gives you steady trade winds over flat, shallow, turquoise water. The reliable southeast trades, the alize, blow across the Anse Vata bay through the warm season, and a short boat ride out to Ilot Maitre and Ilot Goeland puts you on knee-deep sand flats where you can stand up, relaunch and progress without swell or hazards. Beginners get an almost ideal classroom, and stronger riders can chase the open lagoon and the reef edge when the wind builds to twenty-five knots. Anse Vata itself is a lively beachfront of kite and windsurf schools, so gear, lessons and downwinders are all easy to arrange, and you ride with the peaks of Grande Terre behind you and reef water all around.
Best months
The trade wind season runs roughly September to April, with the most consistent wind from November to February when the southeast alize blows on most afternoons at fifteen to twenty-five knots. Water is warm year round and the islet flats off Noumea are shallow and flat, which is why the area suits first-timers as well as freeriders. Wind can drop for days when the trades ease, so allow buffer days in a trip. The islet sand flats are tide-dependent, and schools time lessons to the wind and water level.
Getting there & around
The kite scene centres on Anse Vata beach and the Port du Sud marina in Noumea, a short drive from downtown and from La Tontouta international airport. Schools run lessons and rentals from the beach and shuttle students by boat to the Maitre and Goeland islet flats for safe, shallow learning conditions. Lessons are in French and English, gear is provided, and it is easy to combine kiting with a lagoon or reef day. Come in the September to April trade season and build in spare days in case the wind eases.

Noumea Kite School
SchoolNoumea Kite School teaches on the South Lagoon from the Orphelinat bay at the Port du Sud marina in Noumea. Its instructors hold the French BPJEPS kitesurf, wakeboard and water-ski diploma, and lessons run out to the flat, shallow water around the Maitre and Goeland islets, the safest learning ground in the lagoon. The school takes beginners through their first sessions and helps riders progress, from group courses to private coaching, with recent equipment provided.
Vakarm Kite School
SchoolVakarm Kite School is the teaching arm of an established Noumea board-sports shop on the route du Velodrome, grown out of the former Off the Lips brand. Its instructors hold the BPJEPS kitesurf diploma with more than ten years of experience and follow the AF Kite charter: no more than three or four students per instructor, permanent radio contact, recent kites and a safety boat. Lessons run on the flat lagoon water off Ilot Maitre and Ilot Goeland.
