Kitesurfing in Le Morne
A basalt peninsula on the wild south-west tip of Mauritius, crowned by the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant mountain and wrapped by a turquoise lagoon. The reef pass here throws up One Eye, one of the most famous wave-riding spots in kitesurfing, while the flat, waist-deep water inside the lagoon is a world-class beginner and freestyle playground.
Why here
Le Morne is the reason kitesurfers put Mauritius on the map. From roughly May to October the south-east trade winds blow steady and side-shore across a huge shallow lagoon at the foot of the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant, giving beginners a safe, waist-deep flat-water classroom and freestylers a mirror to train on. Out at the reef pass sits One Eye, a fast, hollow left-hander that peels for hundreds of metres over shallow coral and is spoken of in the same breath as the best wave-riding spots on earth, strictly the preserve of expert strapless and wave riders. The peninsula packs several distinct zones into one bay: the protected inner lagoon, the choppier open water, the Manawa channel, and the reef breaks beyond, so the same trip can carry you from a first water start to riding a genuine ocean wave. Add warm water, reliable wind and a mountain backdrop, and it is one of the few places that suits a total beginner and a world-tour freestyler on the same afternoon.
Best months
The kite season runs roughly from May to October, when the south-east trades are most reliable and blow side-shore across the lagoon, typically building through the morning. Winter (June to August) is the windiest and coolest stretch. The inner lagoon is flat and shallow, ideal for lessons and freestyle, while One Eye and the outer reef breaks are for experienced riders only, over shallow coral with a strong current on the pass. Water stays warm year round, though a shorty helps in winter. A kite lagoon zoning system separates lessons, freeriders and the wave.
Getting there & around
Le Morne is on the far south-west corner of the island, about a 50 minute drive from the airport and over an hour from the northern resort towns, so most kiters base in Le Morne, La Gaulette or Riviere Noire nearby. Schools cluster on the public beach and the Kite Lagoon; some sit inside the resorts on the peninsula. Book lessons ahead in the June to August peak. The reach out to One Eye is a boat or long upwind ride, and most schools run rescue boat cover for the outer zones.

Hang Loose Tours
SchoolHang Loose Tours is a local kite school on the coastal road at Le Morne, founded in 2014 by Christian Stepnow, one of the few IKO examiners in Mauritius, qualified to train and certify kite instructors worldwide. It teaches beginners through to freestyle and wave riders, runs downwinders and coastal kite safaris, and rents current equipment. Sessions are covered by a rescue boat with VHF radio and full insurance, and the team also coaches surfing and stand-up paddle.
Le Morne Kite School
SchoolLe Morne Kite School has taught on the Le Morne lagoon since 2003, making it one of the longest-running kite schools on the peninsula. Its IKO-certified instructors teach in small groups of two or one-to-one, using current Duotone equipment, with lessons in French and English. Beginners learn on the flat, waist-deep water inside the lagoon before progressing toward the reef, and the school rents gear and runs downwinders for independent riders.
