Kitesurfing in Lake CalimaCO
A reservoir in the hills above Cali whose geography funnels wind down the valley nearly every afternoon of the year. One of the most reliable inland kitesurfing venues in the Americas.
Why here
Lake Calima is a wind machine: the valley accelerates the trade flow so reliably that 15-25 knots arrives most afternoons in every month, which almost no inland venue anywhere can claim. Flat fresh water, no tides, no currents, and no sea life worries make it close to the ideal classroom, and the shoreline schools run a steady program of hourly lessons through multi-day camps. For Colombian riders it is the national training ground; for a traveler it pairs naturally with Cali, 90 minutes downhill, for a salsa-and-kite week that exists nowhere else.
Best months
Wind blows year-round, typically switching on around midday and holding through the afternoon at 15-25 knots, gusty by ocean standards but consistent by any other. The June-August and December-February windows are the most reliable; mornings are for rest or theory. Fresh water at altitude is cooler than the Caribbean; most riders wear a shorty or light wetsuit.
Getting there & around
Fly into Cali (CLO) and drive about 90 minutes up to the lake; the kite scene centers on the Darien side. Schools rent full kit and run lessons by the hour or as multi-day packages, with simple lakeside lodging nearby. Weekends bring crowds from Cali; midweek the lake is quiet.
