Kitesurfing in Diani BeachKE

A long ribbon of white sand and turquoise lagoon on Kenya's south coast, sheltered by a reef and blessed with two separate wind seasons a year. East Africa's most established kitesurfing beach.

Why here

Diani gets two kite seasons where most destinations get one: the cooler kusi monsoon blows side-onshore from June to September, and the hotter kaskazi returns from December to March, giving the beach eight-plus windy months spread across both halves of the year. The lagoon behind the reef serves flat, waist-deep learning water at low tide; the reef itself serves waves for those who progress. The scene is anchored by East Africa's longest-running kite school, IKO-affiliated with radio-coached lessons, and the safari math is the real trick: the Mara's migration season and the kusi wind season are the same months, making Kenya the rare place a kite week and a safari week share one flight.

Kusi season (June-September) blows a steady 15-25 knots with cooler air; kaskazi (December-March) runs lighter and hotter, 12-20 knots with the calmest sea state. October-November and April-May are the between-season lulls. Tides matter: the lagoon is best around low tide, and schools schedule lessons to it.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Mombasa (MBA) and cross the Likoni ferry or take the new road link, about 90 minutes to Diani, or fly direct to Ukunda's airstrip (UKA) beside the beach. Kite schools sit right on the sand; book lesson packages a week or two ahead in the kusi peak. Pair with a Mara safari in the same June-September window for the full Kenya double.
