Kitesurfing in CumbucoBR
A small coastal village 30km from Fortaleza, where NE trade winds blow at 18-25 knots for seven months of the year. The protected Lagoa do Cauípe, 5km north, is one of South America's best flat-water training environments. The most logistically straightforward of the Brazilian kite destinations — easy airport access, walkable village.
Why here
Cumbuco is the most logistically practical kitesurfing destination in Brazil — 30km from Fortaleza Airport in Ceará, where NE trade winds blow at 18-25 knots for seven to eight months a year and the water temperature stays at 28-30°C year-round. The beach itself is workable for all levels, but the real draw is Lagoa do Cauípe, 5km north: a protected freshwater lagoon where wind accelerates off the dunes and creates flat, consistent conditions for course progressions, freestyle practice, and first sessions without ocean swell. Low cost of living, good school infrastructure, and Cumbuco's position as the logical base for a multi-spot Ceará kite trip (Jericoacoara is 4-5 hours further, Paracuru is 1 hour north) make it the sensible first stop on a Brazilian kite itinerary.
Best months
Wind: NE trade winds, 18-25 knots consistent, peak season July-January. Direction: side-onshore. Water temp: 27-30°C year-round. Lagoa do Cauípe (5km north): flat freshwater lagoon, shallow, wind accelerates as it crosses the dunes — excellent for learning and freestyle. Main Cumbuco beach: cross-shore, more open swell, suitable for intermediate. Low tide exposes sandbanks extending offshore — can create downwind hazard; ask locally about conditions before launching. Strong tidal current near the river mouth adjacent to the main beach — avoid this zone for learning sessions. Swell generally small to moderate. Wind typically builds from late morning and peaks 1-3pm.
Getting there & around

Schools (Windtown Lagoa, Kite Brazil, Kite Village Cumbuco) offer packages including accommodation in Cumbuco village or at the lagoon. Week packages (accommodation, instruction, equipment) typically start around $700-1000 USD. Budget to mid pricing throughout.
