Kitesurfing in Cape Town
South Africa's most geographically dramatic city, wedged between Table Mountain and two oceans: paragliding off Signal Hill, kite beaches up the coast, and the Cape Malay food heritage of the Bo-Kaap.
Why here
Cape Town in October is the Cape Doctor clearing its throat. The southeaster that makes this one of the world's great kitesurfing cities is building but has not arrived, which means roughly half the wind of the December to February peak and almost none of the crowd. The schools open for the season in October, the beaches at Bloubergstrand and Sunset Beach are quiet, and lesson slots and accommodation are available at prices that vanish by December. That is the trade. If you want the Cape Town of the videos, come later. If you want Table Mountain across the water and space to work on something, October is the underrated month.
Best months
October is a building month and the row sits outside best months for that reason. The southeaster is establishing rather than established, so expect a mix of good days and blown-out or windless ones rather than the metronome of high summer. The water is the other honest constraint: the Benguela current keeps it at roughly 19 to 20 degrees at best and often colder, so a full wetsuit is not optional regardless of the air temperature. Blouberg is a wave and chop spot with a shore break rather than a flatwater lagoon, and combined with cold water and building wind that makes October a poor month to learn from zero. Come to consolidate, not to start.
Getting there & around
Fly into Cape Town International and drive about 30 minutes northwest to the Blouberg and Sunset Beach strip. A car is worth having: the wind moves around the peninsula and the schools chase it, and public transport does not. Both schools open for the season in October and run through to March. Accommodation on the Blouberg strip is straightforward and much cheaper this side of the summer peak. Instruction is in English with German, French and several other languages supported. Standard urban precautions apply on the beachfront, and the schools will tell you where not to leave a car.

High Five Kitesurf School
SchoolStates on its own site that it is the only IKO center in Cape Town. Runs private and small-group lessons at Bloubergstrand, advanced jumping and looping sessions, guided downwinders and IKO instructor training. Open October through March and closed April through September, riding every windy day from eight until sunset.
Kitekahunas
SchoolKitesurf school at Sunset Beach at the start of the Blouberg strip, directed by German speed kitesurfing champion Wolfram Reiners. Runs a modular beginner progression, wave kitesurfing courses and camps, downwind passage training and freestyle coaching, with two students per instructor for beginners. Season runs October through March.
