Kitesurfing in BloubergstrandZA
Cape Town's kite coast, where the Cape Doctor blows 25-40 knots all summer against the Table Mountain postcard view.
Why here
The Cape Doctor, the summer south-easterly, delivers 25 to 40 knots of cross-onshore wind with a consistency that makes Bloubergstrand one of the world's premier big-air arenas, all of it framed by the Table Mountain view across the bay. Red Bull King of the Air, the sport's flagship big-air event, holds its window at Kite Beach here each season, and on a strong day the pros share the sky with everyone else. It is not a light-wind learning pond: the wind rewards intermediates and up, and the schools run beginner courses here on the moderate days or at flat-water Langebaan up the coast.
Best months
The Cape Doctor season runs October to March; November to February is the reliable core, and the King of the Air window falls in late November to early December. Water is cold (Atlantic, 13-16C); wetsuits year-round. Strong-wind riding suits intermediate and up.
Getting there & around
Twenty-five minutes from central Cape Town; Kite Beach and Big Bay have parking and rigging lawns. Schools shuttle beginners to Langebaan when the wind is too strong to learn at Blouberg.
