Durmitor's glacial plateau was shaped for horseback: open meadows at 1,450 meters between the Black Lake and the periodic lakes, under Bobotov Kuk's wall, on a UNESCO massif whose herds still summer on adjacent Sinjajevina, Europe's largest mountain pasture. Led rides run one to three hours from Zabljak at prices that make a first ride an easy yes, and the Trsa side adds three-hour crossings of the high plateau in season. It is the gentlest way onto the mountain the trekkers earn on foot, which makes it the uneven-interest couple's perfect Durmitor day.
Best months
June to September; rides are led and beginner-friendly with a rider weight limit around 110 kilograms. Mornings beat the afternoon storm build. One-to-three-hour formats run 30-90 euros.
Getting there & around
Rides meet in Zabljak or at Trsa on the plateau road. Book a day ahead in August; the Black Lake walk fills the rest of the day.

OutfitterDurmitor Adventure runs led horse rides out of Zabljak with over 20 horses and riding instructors who double as guides. Rides last one, two, or three hours, from a 30 euro beginner-friendly lake plateau loop to a three hour tour past Devil's Lake and Fish Lake, with a rider weight limit of 110 kg. The same outfit also runs Tara rafting, Nevidio canyoning, via ferrata, zip line, and Durmitor hiking.

OutfitterMonteriver runs three hour led horse rides at Trsa, the plateau village above which Durmitor rises, from June to September, with a minimum of four riders and no prior experience needed. The rides operate alongside its rafting camp Modra Rijeka at Brijeg, Pluzine, which runs the 18 km Tara stretch from Brstanovica to Scepan Polje in about three to four hours. Its rafting skippers are licensed and speak English and Russian.
