Run by a dedicated company and now settled in the eastern capital, it programmes a broad mix of new international cinema, restored film history and a full survey of current Slovak production, screened across the city's cinemas and open-air venues. Its signature is the ceremony as much as the screenings: the Golden Camera honours a lasting contribution to cinema, and the Actor's Mission award recognises performers, drawing directors and actors of real standing to the square. Kosice makes an easy host, a walkable centre around a Gothic cathedral and a lively cafe culture, and the festival spreads through it rather than sealing itself off. Art Film Fest runs for about a week in June in Kosice. June weather is warm and suits the open-air screenings, though evenings can cool. Screenings are ticketed and the popular gala events sell out, so plan a schedule and book ahead. The festival uses venues across the centre, most within walking distance of the main square.
Getting there & around
Kosice has its own airport with European connections and is about five hours by train east of Bratislava, or a short hop from Poprad and the Tatras. The festival venues cluster in the walkable historic centre, so a central base removes the need for transport. OrganizerART FILM FEST s.r.o. organises the International Film Festival Art Film, one of Slovakia's oldest and largest film events, now held each June in Kosice.
