Why here
The Busan International Film Festival is Asia's premier film event: ten October days when the sail-roofed Busan Cinema Center and the Haeundae beachfront become the continent's film capital, with the Asian Contents and Film Market running alongside and premieres that set the year's Asian cinema agenda. Founded in 1996, BIFF built its reputation on discovering new Asian directors rather than importing Western prestige, and the open-air ceremonies at the Cinema Center's outdoor theatre are the festival's signature image. Around it sits Busan itself: Jagalchi fish market breakfasts, beach mornings, and a city that treats the festival as a civic holiday.
Best months
Annual, roughly ten days in early-to-mid October: the 31st edition runs October 6-15 2026, with the film market October 10-13; 2027 dates publish in spring. October is Busan's best month, warm and typhoon-season-ending. Tickets release online in waves and popular premieres sell out in minutes.
Getting there & around
KTX from Seoul in under three hours. Base in Haeundae or Centum City near the Cinema Center. Individual screenings are cheap; book accommodation for festival week well ahead.
