Why here
Bitola hosts the Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers' Film Festival, the world's oldest festival dedicated to the art of cinematography, named for Milton and Janaki Manaki, who shot the Balkans' first film footage here with their Bioscope Camera 300 in 1905. Every September the festival awards its Golden Camera 300 to the year's best directors of photography, drawing working cinematographers rather than red-carpet traffic, in a town whose Sirok Sokak promenade and consul-era mansions supply the backdrop. The 2026 edition runs September 19-25, and screenings fill the renovated center cinemas at prices any traveler can afford.
Best months
Annual in the second half of September: the 2026 edition runs September 19-25. Screenings are ticketed but cheap; masterclasses and the camera-award programs are the connoisseur draw. September in Bitola is warm days, cool nights.
Getting there & around
Bitola is three hours from Skopje by bus or ninety minutes from Ohrid airport. The festival venues cluster around the Sirok Sokak, all walkable.
