Cycling / Bike Touring in Lisse
A town in the Bollenstreek, the flower-bulb district between Haarlem and Leiden in South Holland, and home to the Keukenhof gardens. In spring the surrounding fields turn into wide blocks of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, best seen from the flat cycle paths that thread between them.
Why here
For a few weeks each spring the Bollenstreek around Lisse becomes one of the most photographed landscapes in the Netherlands, and a bicycle is the right way to be inside it rather than stuck in a coach on the road. The bulb fields run in solid stripes of red, yellow and pink to the horizon, and the flat, quiet lanes between them let you ride from block to block, stop where you like, and reach corners the tour buses never see. Lisse is the base because it holds the Keukenhof, the great spring bulb garden open only from mid-March to mid-May, and you cannot cycle inside Keukenhof itself, but rental kiosks at its gates hand you a bike and a signposted loop through the working farms all around it, from a gentle few kilometres to routes of 25 or 35 km down toward Noordwijk and the dunes. The bloom is brief and weather-dependent, so timing is everything, but catch it right and a day on the bike here is the quintessential Dutch spring.
Best months
The bulbs flower from roughly mid-March to mid-May, with tulips usually at their peak in the second half of April; exact timing shifts a week or two each year with the weather, so check bloom reports before booking. Keukenhof opens only for this window, in 2026 from about 19 March to 10 May, and the bike-rental kiosks run to the same season. The riding is flat and easy, but the fields are exposed and spring weather swings between sun, wind and cold showers, so pack layers and rain protection. Weekends at peak bloom are very busy.
Getting there & around
Lisse and Keukenhof are about 40 minutes from Amsterdam or 20 from Leiden by bus; the Keukenhof Express and other shuttle buses run from Schiphol, Leiden and Haarlem in season. Rental kiosks sit at the Keukenhof car park and in the surrounding towns, and hand out free route maps for loops of 5 to 35 km through the fields. Ride only on the paths and lanes and never into the planted fields, which are working farmland. Book bikes ahead on peak-bloom weekends, and go early to beat the crowds and the buses.

For the flower season it publishes a self-guided tulip route of around 48 km through the bulb fields, starting near Sassenheim and running via Voorhout, Noordwijk and Lisse past Keukenhof, supplied with a booklet of the cycling junction network so riders can shorten or extend the loop as they like.
Rent-a-Bike van Dam
OutfitterRent-a-Bike van Dam runs the bike-rental kiosk at the Keukenhof car park, opposite the garden's main entrance in the Bollenstreek. It keeps a stock of more than 500 bicycles, including children's bikes, child seats, tandems and cargo bikes, and hands out free maps for four colour-coded signposted routes running from about 5 km around Keukenhof up to 25 and 35 km through the surrounding tulip and hyacinth fields. It opens for the spring bulb season, roughly 19 March to 10 May.
