Cycling / Bike Touring in Codru

Moldova · Eastern Europe

Moldova's central wine region, a belt of forested hills and vineyards around Chisinau that holds the country's two most famous underground cellar cities, Cricova and Milestii Mici.

Why here

The Codru hills are the most rewarding place to put Moldova under your own wheels, because the country is small, quiet and made for a wine-and-village pace. Roads roll through oak forest and vineyard between the capital and the cellar cities, with almost no traffic once you leave the main highways and a constant supply of monasteries, roadside wells and family wineries to stop at. It is gentle touring rather than mountain riding: short days link Chisinau, the Codru forest reserve and the underground cellars of Cricova and Milestii Mici, and longer routes run south-east toward the Stefan Voda vineyards and the Nistru. A ride here is really a way to travel between tastings and traditional meals, arriving at a cellar sweaty and hungry rather than by tour bus. For a rider who wants distance without altitude and culture at every stop, rural Moldova is an easy, underrated choice.

Best months

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Late spring and early autumn are the best riding windows, with warm, dry days and the vineyards in leaf or harvest; July and August can be hot and exposed on the open hills. Roads are generally quiet but surfaces vary from smooth asphalt to gravel farm tracks, so a trekking or gravel bike suits the terrain. Carry water for the gaps between villages, and plan tasting stops around booked winery visits.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Most rides start from Chisinau, where an operator can deliver a bike and set a guided or self-guided route through the Codru wine country. Distances are modest and the terrain is rolling rather than mountainous, but signage is limited, so a GPS track or a guide helps. Combine riding days with booked cellar tastings and village guesthouse stays, and note that winery visits need reservations rather than walk-in.
