Culinary / Cooking in Vilnius

Lithuania · Northern Europe

Lithuania's capital, a Baltic city on the Neris whose UNESCO-listed Old Town, one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe, mixes Gothic, Renaissance and baroque churches with a lively contemporary art, food and festival scene, including the self-declared artists' quarter of Uzupis.

Why here

Lithuanian home cooking is the point here, not restaurant plating. In a private kitchen a few kilometres from the Old Town, you learn to make cepelinai from scratch, the heavy potato dumplings stuffed with meat that are the national dish and are notoriously hard to get right, plus cold beetroot soup, saltibarsciai, that turns a startling pink. The value of doing it in a home rather than a school is the running commentary on why Lithuanians eat this way, the potato-and-dairy backbone of a northern climate, and then sitting down to eat what you made. Small groups mean you actually get your hands in the dough.

Classes run year-round in a home kitchen, so weather is irrelevant. Groups are kept small and the menu is adjusted for dietary needs if you ask ahead. Book directly and in advance, since these are private sessions rather than daily walk-in classes.

Getting there & around

Cooking Vilnius

School

Cooking Vilnius is run by Ruta Kairiene from her home about three kilometres from Vilnius Old Town, where she teaches small groups to cook traditional Lithuanian dishes from scratch. A typical class makes cepelinai, the potato dumplings stuffed with meat, and cold beetroot soup, saltibarsciai, before everyone sits down to eat the results together. Kairiene keeps numbers low and adapts the menu to dietary needs, and also hosts home dining experiences separate from the classes.
