Culinary / Cooking in Kigali
Rwanda's clean, hilly capital, spread over a series of ridges in the centre of the country. A calm, walkable city that pairs a serious culture of memory with a growing contemporary-art and dining scene, and serves as the road hub north to the gorillas and east to Akagera's savannah.
Why here
Rwandan home cooking is built on the hills: beans, plantain, cassava leaves, sweet potato, groundnut, and the smoky brochettes and grilled goat that anchor a Kigali night out. The best way to learn it is in a kitchen with the people who cook it every day. In the old neighbourhood of Nyamirambo, a women's cooperative runs a hands-on class that starts with a walk through market stalls to buy the day's vegetables, then moves to a home kitchen to pound cassava leaves and cook isombe, ubugali and a spread of traditional dishes over charcoal, all eaten together at the end. It is a rare, unhurried look at a cuisine that almost never appears on a menu abroad, taught by the women who run the cooperative, with the fee going back into their literacy and vocational work. You leave with a full plate and a real sense of how Kigali eats at home.
Best months
Classes run year-round and are usually under cover, so rain is no obstacle. The market-plus-cooking format takes three to four hours and is best booked a day or two ahead, as the cooperative keeps groups small. Come hungry, since you eat everything you cook. Vegetarian versions are easy, as much of the everyday Rwandan diet is plant-based.
Getting there & around
The Nyamirambo Women's Center is in the Nyamirambo neighbourhood in the southwest of the city, easy to reach by taxi, and its cooking class pairs naturally with the center's walking tour of the same area. Book direct with the center, which puts the fee back into training and community work. Several Kigali hotels also run more polished cooking classes for those who want a restaurant setting.

Nyamirambo Women's Center
OrganizerThe Nyamirambo Women's Center is a Rwandan NGO founded at the end of 2007 by eighteen women in the Nyamirambo district of Kigali, running community tourism to fund its education and cooperative work. Its Rwandan cooking class begins with a market visit, then moves to a member's home to prepare six traditional dishes over charcoal. The center also runs a walking tour of Nyamirambo and a tailoring cooperative, and puts its income back into literacy and vocational training.
