Thailand's capital and one of the world's great street food cities. A layered, dense megalopolis where extraordinary food exists at every price point, from pre-dawn wholesale markets to Michelin-starred tasting menus.

Why here

Bangkok's food culture runs from Michelin-starred tasting menus to street cart pad kra pao assembled in 90 seconds, and both are worth studying. The city has a mature cooking class scene that teaches genuine technique: proper wok management, fish sauce calibration, the logic of a Thai curry paste. More interesting than the hotel-based programs are the market-to-table classes based in working districts (Banglamphu, Bang Krachao) that start at 6-7am in a wholesale market before moving to a domestic-scale kitchen. The sheer density and quality of food available for very little money makes Bangkok uniquely suited to self-directed eating education between formal sessions.

November to March is the most comfortable window: cooler, less humid, and easier for spending time in a kitchen. April is extremely hot and Songkran (mid-April water festival) disrupts normal city rhythm. The rainy season (May to October) is workable since most cooking classes happen indoors, but the pre-dawn wholesale markets are more pleasant in the cool season when vendors can work longer hours without the afternoon heat.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is one of Southeast Asia's main long-haul hubs. The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro reach most cooking class neighborhoods without the need for a taxi. Most operators offer hotel pickup for early morning market visits. The cooking class market is crowded with options; prioritize classes that include a genuine local market component and a residential-scale kitchen rather than hotel demonstration kitchens. Bangkok rewards unstructured time alongside any planned classes: some of the most useful food education happens in the Chinatown (Yaowarat) and Chatuchak street circuits.

Blue Elephant Cooking School

School

Blue Elephant's Bangkok cooking school operates from a colonial-style mansion on Sathorn Road, a Fine Arts Department-listed building near BTS Surasak. The Discovery Class covers four to five recipes in a half-day session including fresh curry paste preparation, stir-fry, and classic Thai dessert. Classes run in English; students eat what they cook at the end of the session. The school also offers advanced classes for more experienced cooks.
