Craft Skills (Bladesmithing, Pottery, Glass) in SheffieldGB
England's Steel City — an industrial city in South Yorkshire that dominated global cutlery and steel production for three centuries. Sheffield is reclaiming that identity through independent smithing schools, heritage forge buildings, and a growing community of bladesmiths working in the city's historic workshops.
Why here
Sheffield made the cutlery that stocked the world's tables for three centuries — at its peak, the city employed 50,000 people in steel and cutlery. That industrial history has left behind a network of heritage forge buildings now occupied by independent bladesmiths and blacksmithing schools. Three dedicated schools operate here: Bushfire Forge runs structured bladesmithing courses from beginner through swordsmithing; Forge Four teaches one-to-one blacksmithing at the historic Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet; Gregory & Tesseras works from Portland Works, a 145-year cutlery factory still in use. Sheffield is rare in having multiple serious schools, not just demonstrations.
Best months
All three schools operate indoor forges year-round, unaffected by English weather. Course schedules vary — most schools run weekend half-days and full days, with multi-day programmes requiring advance booking. Summer and autumn are most popular; winter has the most availability.
Getting there & around
Sheffield is 2 hours from London on the Midland Main Line. Manchester Airport (MAN) is 1 hour by car or train. All three schools are within the city — Forge Four at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is 10 minutes from the city centre; Gregory & Tesseras is in the centre near the train station. Book courses directly with each school.

Bushfire Forge School of Bladesmithing
SchoolSheffield's most established dedicated bladesmithing school, founded in 2008 by Owen Bush — a professional bladesmith and researcher in historical European swordsmithing. The school is fully equipped for up to 10 students and runs structured courses in knifemaking, swordsmithing, axe making, and pattern-welded Damascus steel. Courses run over one to five days; prior experience is not required for introductory levels but the curriculum extends into serious professional-grade instruction for advanced students.
Forge Four Blacksmithing
SchoolA one-to-one and one-to-two blacksmithing school based at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet — a 19th-century water-powered scythe works on the edge of Sheffield, now a working museum. Founded by resident blacksmith David Southgate, Forge Four teaches half-day and full-day sessions in the forge, with the industrial heritage building providing a direct connection to Sheffield's steel tradition. The intimate format means sessions are tailored entirely to the student.
Gregory & Tesseras Blacksmiths
SchoolA working blacksmithing studio inside Portland Works — a 145-year-old cutlery factory in central Sheffield that still operates as a working craft building. Gregory & Tesseras offers introductory blacksmithing courses and a blacksmithing-and-gin experience, working in a fully equipped forge within an active historical building. The location is significant: Portland Works has been continuously producing Sheffield steel since the 1870s and is now a protected industrial heritage site.
