Western Sahara

Northern Africa

A disputed, sparsely populated territory on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa, most of it desert. Its status is unresolved under the United Nations; the coast and the main towns, including Dakhla, are administered by Morocco, while a smaller interior zone is held by the Polisario Front, separated by a long sand berm. The Dakhla lagoon, a shallow, wind-blown bay between desert and ocean, is a world-class flat-water kitesurfing destination. Travel to the Moroccan-administered coast is generally accessible; the interior, the berm and the Mauritania border areas carry mine and conflict advisories.
