Boats cross the huge, pale lagoon from the main island of Fongafale to islets such as Fualopa and Tepuka, where you snorkel over coral and reef fish, watch green turtles feed and rest, and land on empty white-sand motu where black noddies and other seabirds nest. There are no crowds, no dive resorts and no jet skis, just the reserve, a local boat captain and the vast Pacific. Tuvalu is one of the least visited countries on earth and sits at the sharp edge of sea-level rise, so the visit carries weight beyond the wildlife. It is genuine end-of-the-map travel, and the marine life inside the protected area is the payoff.
