A landlocked, overwhelmingly mountainous Central Asian republic where more than nine tenths of the land is upland and half of it sits above 3,000 metres. The Pamir ranges in the east hold Peak Ismoil Somoni (7,495m), the highest point of the former Soviet Union, and the M41 Pamir Highway threads the Gorno-Badakhshan region past the Wakhan Corridor toward Kyrgyzstan. The Fann Mountains and their turquoise lakes rise in the northwest, and the capital Dushanbe and the Silk Road city of Khujand anchor the lowlands.

Moskvina GladeJul Aug SepMoskvina Glade is the launch point for the highest mountains in Tajikistan and the former Soviet Union. From this base camp at about 4,300 metres, where the Walter and Moskvina glaciers join, climbers set out for Peak Ismoil Somoni at 7,495 metres, once called Communism Peak and the highest point of the old USSR, and for Peak Korzhenevskaya at 7,105 metres a short way north. The two are often combined in a single expedition of four to five weeks, using the camp for acclimatisation and rest between rotations. These are serious glaciated high-altitude climbs on which weather and altitude, not extreme technical difficulty, are the main tests, and a permit and organised base-camp logistics are required. Access is usually a short helicopter flight from the lowlands, since the overland approach is a week of trekking with porters over high passes.

Dushanbeyear-roundThe National Museum of Antiquities in Dushanbe is the single best place to grasp how much history ran through this corner of Central Asia. Its centrepiece is the Buddha in Nirvana, a reclining clay Buddha almost thirteen metres long excavated from the Ajina-Teppa monastery in the Vakhsh valley, the largest ancient Buddha in Central Asia, disfigured in the Arab conquest of the seventh century and painstakingly reassembled. Around it the collection runs from the Bronze Age town of Sarazm, a UNESCO site, through the Greek-influenced finds of the Oxus Temple, including a portrait of Alexander as Hercules, to the fifth to seventh century wall paintings of Sogdian Penjikent with their famous harpist. It is a compact two floors that turns the Silk Road from an idea into objects, and a natural first or last stop in the capital.

Pamir HighwayJun Jul Aug SepThe Pamir Highway, the M41, is one of the world's great overland drives, a rough ribbon of road that runs east from Dushanbe through the Gorno-Badakhshan region and over a string of high passes toward Osh in Kyrgyzstan. It climbs onto a treeless plateau that sits mostly above 3,500 metres, crossing the Ak-Baital pass at 4,655 metres, past the deep blue of Karakul lake in its meteorite basin and the salt flats around Bulunkul. The classic run follows the Panj river along the Afghan border, where a branch drops into the Wakhan Corridor beneath the snow wall of the Hindu Kush, past the Yamchun fort, the Bibi Fatima hot springs and the Ismaili Pamiri villages of the valley. You travel it in a 4WD with a local driver, sleeping in family homestays, and you need a GBAO permit for the whole region. It is remote, high and slow, which is the point.

Trekking / Hiking

Fann MountainsJun Jul Aug SepThe Fann Mountains are Tajikistan's most accessible high range and its classic trekking country, a compact knot of granite and limestone peaks in the northwest crowded with glacial lakes. The walking centres on a handful of turquoise and cobalt lakes: the Kulikalon basin under the wall of Chimtarga, the highest Fann peak at 5,489 metres, the alpine Alaudin lakes, and the Haft Kul, or Seven Lakes, strung up the Shing valley, each a different colour. Trails link them over passes in the 3,500 to 4,000 metre range, with nights in tents or in village homestays where families still farm the valleys. It is high, dry and sunny, the routes are non-technical, and the whole range sits within a day's drive of Samarkand or Dushanbe, which is why it has become the standard introduction to Central Asian trekking.

NavruzDushanbeMarNavruz is the spring-equinox new year, and Tajikistan keeps it as its biggest holiday, nowhere more so than in Dushanbe. Over four public-holiday days from 21 March the capital fills with colour: the purpose-built Navruzgoh complex and the city squares host concerts, folk music and the laying out of sumalak, the slow-cooked wheat paste that is the dish of the festival, while families wear new clothes and set the haft-sin or haft-mewa table. The celebration keeps its old rural heart in the horse games, above all buzkashi, the mounted contest for a goat carcass that draws crowds to grounds around the city and at Hisor. Recognised by UNESCO as shared intangible heritage across the region, Navruz in Tajikistan is a state occasion and a folk one at once, and it is the one time of year when the whole country is celebrating the same thing at the same time.
