DamascusMar Apr May Oct NovDamascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and its museums and monuments hold the layered record of that depth. The National Museum of Damascus is the single best place to grasp it, with the alphabet tablets of Ugarit, the statues and tomb reliefs of Palmyra, and a reconstructed 2nd-century synagogue moved wall by wall from Dura-Europos. A short walk away, the Ottoman-era Azem Palace houses the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, and the Umayyad Mosque, one of the oldest monumental mosques anywhere, anchors the walled Old City with its covered souq and Roman street plan. Seeing them in a day or two, guided by Syrians who can read the inscriptions and the history, is a way to understand the Levant rather than tick a list. After the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, a small number of Damascus operators cautiously reopened these routes, and the museums and Old City are the natural first destination for anyone the security situation allows to come.
