A Southeast Asian country of the Irrawaddy plains, the eastern Himalaya and a long Andaman coast, with a deep Buddhist heritage centred on the temple plain of Bagan, Inle Lake and Mandalay. Since the 2021 military coup it has been under a US Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory with armed conflict across much of the country. A narrow tourism pocket around Bagan continues under established operators, but this is a do-not-travel destination and travel should be approached with a responsible operator and full awareness of the risks and ethics.

BaganJan Feb Mar Oct Nov DecThe sight of hot-air balloons drifting over the temple plain of Bagan at first light is one of the iconic images of Asia, and for the traveler in the basket it is the best way to grasp the scale of the place. Bagan is a UNESCO site where more than two thousand brick temples and stupas, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, spread across a bend of the Irrawaddy. From a thousand feet up you see the pattern the ground never reveals: spires and terraces emerging from morning mist, the river to the west, the hills beyond. Flights lift off at dawn in the cool dry season, drift with the wind over the densest cluster of temples, and land after roughly forty-five minutes to an hour. It is calm, quiet and slow, and the ballooning operators here are long-established, flying only in the settled weather from October to April.

BaganJan Feb Nov DecBagan is one of the great archaeological landscapes of Asia, a plain on the Irrawaddy where more than two thousand Buddhist monuments survive from the kingdom that ruled here between the 11th and 13th centuries. Unlike a single ruin, it is a whole sacred city to explore slowly: painted interiors in temples like Ananda and Sulamani, the terraced mass of Dhammayangyi, and small brick stupas you can have entirely to yourself. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 after decades of debate over its restoration. The rewarding way to see it is over two or three unhurried days by e-bike or horse cart, with a guide who can read the murals and the dynastic history and steer you to the quiet corners rather than the coach stops. Since the 2021 coup visitor numbers have collapsed, so the temples are emptier than at any time in a generation.
