ErbilMar Apr May Oct NovThe citadel of Erbil rises on a steep mound above the modern city, an oval of Ottoman-era houses on a tell that has been inhabited for perhaps six thousand years, which makes it one of the oldest continuously occupied places on earth and earned it a UNESCO listing in 2014. Walking its single ring road and looking down over the Qaysari bazaar is the clearest way to feel that continuity. Inside the walls, the Kurdish Textile Museum shows the region's weaving and tribal dress, and below the mound the Erbil Civilization Museum holds Assyrian and Mesopotamian finds from the surrounding plains. For a region most people know only from the news, this is the calm, human counterweight: a working bazaar, tea houses on the citadel square, and museums run by people who want you to understand Kurdistan on its own terms. Erbil is also the base from which the rest of the north opens up, from the shrine of Lalish to the mountain town of Amadiya, so the city and its museums are the natural first destination.
