Kunta Kinteh IslandJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecKunta Kinteh Island is the emotional heart of the Roots story and one of West Africa's key slave-trade heritage sites. This tiny island in the River Gambia, once James Island, held a fort that changed hands between European powers for two centuries and served as a holding and transit point in the trade in enslaved Africans. It took the name Kunta Kinteh after the ancestor Alex Haley traced to the nearby village of Juffureh in his book Roots, and the island together with Juffureh, Albreda and the old trading posts forms a UNESCO World Heritage property that tells the story of European occupation and the slave trade from the African side. You cross by boat from the mainland, walk the fort ruins as the river erodes the island year by year, and visit the villages with their slavery museum and the descendants who keep the memory. Since 1996 The Gambia has held a Roots Homecoming pilgrimage here for the African diaspora. For travellers tracing that history, or anyone wanting to grasp it where it happened, this is a moving, essential visit.
