Bioko IslandJan Feb Mar Nov DecBioko Island is one of the great overlooked wildlife islands of Africa, a volcano-built landmass off the Cameroon coast that carries some of the densest primate life in the region. Seven monkey species live in its forests, among them the drill and the Bioko red colobus, and the remote black-sand beaches of the south, reached through the Gran Caldera de Luba, host four species of nesting sea turtle including leatherbacks. The island rises to Pico Basile, at just over 3,000 metres the highest point in the country, with Moka in the cool southern highlands as the base for forest walks and for the long-running conservation program that monitors the turtles and primates. This is not a polished safari circuit. It is a hard-to-reach, permit-heavy island where a good local operator makes the difference between seeing the wildlife and being turned back at a checkpoint. For a certain kind of traveler, the difficulty and the near-total absence of other visitors are the whole point.
