Dzanga-SanghaJan Feb Jun Jul Aug DecDzanga-Sangha is one of the great wildlife experiences in Africa and one of the least visited, a corner of Congo Basin rainforest where the Central African Republic, Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo meet. Its centrepiece is Dzanga Bai, a large natural forest clearing where more than a hundred forest elephants come out of the trees at once to drink at mineral springs, watched in near silence from a raised wooden platform. Alongside the elephants the reserve protects habituated western lowland gorillas, which visitors track on foot with researchers, plus bongo, forest buffalo, and one of the richest birding lists in the region. This is also the home of the Ba'Aka, the forest people whose net-hunting and plant knowledge is part of a visit here. The reserve is co-managed with WWF, and its tiny scale, a handful of guests at a time, is what keeps the wildlife calm and the forest intact. Reaching it takes real effort and expense, which is exactly why so few people have stood on the Dzanga Bai platform.
