A landlocked, mountainous country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia, ringed by the Hindu Kush and the high Pamir, with a deep Silk Road heritage at Bamiyan, Herat, Balkh and Band-e-Amir. Since the Taliban's return in 2021 it has been under a US Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory, with terrorism, kidnapping and wrongful-detention risks, a suspended US embassy and severe restrictions on women's rights. A small number of specialist operators run trips to the safest areas, but this is a do-not-travel destination.

Wakhan CorridorJul Aug SepThe Wakhan Corridor is the thin finger of Afghanistan that reaches east between Tajikistan and Pakistan to touch China, a high-altitude world that the wars of the last forty years mostly passed by. A trek here climbs from the Hindu Kush into the Afghan Pamir, a plateau of glacial valleys and 4,000-metre passes where Wakhi farmers give way to Kyrgyz herders living in yurts, one of the last fully nomadic cultures in Asia. The classic route runs for around three weeks out of Kabul, with eight or nine days on foot to the Little Pamir and back, crossing passes as high as 4,850 metres and camping among yak herds and salt lakes. It is serious expedition trekking, remote and self-supported, in a region with no roads, no phone signal and no rescue. The reward is a landscape and a way of life almost no outsiders ever see.
