Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Matka Canyon
A limestone gorge on the dammed Treska half an hour from Skopje, paddled past cave monasteries on jade flat water.
Why here
Matka is a limestone gorge on the dammed Treska river half an hour from Skopje's center, and the kayaking is flat-water paddling on jade-green lake past medieval cave monasteries and Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves surveyed in Europe. The paddling pedigree is real: Matka's slalom course hosted the first world wildwater championship in 1975 and remains the home of Macedonian kayaking, with rental singles and doubles by the hour and guided small-group trips from the capital. It is the rare capital-city canyon where an after-breakfast decision puts you on the water by ten.
Best months
April to October is the comfortable season; summer mornings beat both heat and boat traffic. This is flat-water lake kayaking, not whitewater, and suits complete beginners. Weekends draw Skopje day-trippers.
Getting there & around
Thirty minutes by taxi or city bus from Skopje to the trailhead below the dam. Kayak rental runs by the hour at the canyon; guided packages include hotel pickup.
