Photography Expeditions in PantanalBR
The world's largest tropical wetland, covering roughly 150,000 square kilometers across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The Pantanal has the highest concentration of jaguars on earth and exceptional year-round wildlife density including caiman, capybara, giant river otter, and 650+ bird species. Dry season (July-October) delivers the best wildlife photography conditions.
Why here
The Pantanal has the highest density of wildlife in the Americas and the best jaguar sighting rates on earth. Dry season (July-October) concentrates animals around remaining water sources and makes the dirt roads (the Transpantaneira highway and lodge tracks) accessible by vehicle. Jaguars hunt along the river banks in open daylight in a way that does not happen in any other jaguar habitat. Beyond the flagship cat, the combination of giant anteaters, tapirs, capybara, hyacinth macaws, jabiru storks, and several hundred other bird species makes this one of the most photogenic wildlife environments in the world. The lodges that border the rivers position photographers at water level for eye-contact shots.
Best months
July through October is the dry season and peak photography window. Rivers drop, jaguar activity on the banks is at its highest, and the roads are passable. November through June is the wet season: the Pantanal floods extensively, roads become impassable, and jaguar sightings drop significantly. The Cuiaba River area near Porto Jofre (the jaguar hotspot) is accessible year-round by boat, but the dry season gives the most concentrated activity.
Getting there & around
Fly into Cuiaba (CGB) from Sao Paulo or Brasilia, then drive or transfer to lodges along the Transpantaneira highway (150km of dirt road). The river lodges near Porto Jofre for jaguar photography require a further 3-4 hour boat or road transfer from Cuiaba. Specialist operators (Jaguar Photo Safaris, Pantanal Tracker) run multi-day programs combining the road lodges and river camps. Most serious wildlife photography programs are 5-7 days minimum. No visa required for most Western nationals visiting Brazil. Yellow fever vaccination recommended and may be required depending on origin country.

Pantanal Jaguar Safaris
OutfitterA specialist jaguar photography and wildlife safari operator in the northern Pantanal, running programs on the Cuiaba River in the Porto Jofre area, the most reliable jaguar habitat on earth. Programs are built around river-based photography from low-profile boats with naturalist guides, targeting jaguars hunting capybara along the river banks in dry season (July to October).
